In San Gemini there are two districts – Rioni – that every year arrange a famous medieval re-enactment and compete against each other during this famous event.
However, the Rioni are not only famous for this, but also for the delicious ‘Picchiarelli’ that can be enjoyed in their century-old taverns. This is a truly valuable experience that will allow you to learn how to roll Picchiarelli together with the lovely grannies of the Rione Rocca!
What will you do
Hand-rolled pastas made of only water and flour are the heritage of ancient medieval pastas. In southern Umbria they take on different names depending on where they are made: manfricoli in Narni, ciriole in Terni, picchiarelli in San Gemini. The “Picchiarelli” of San Gemini are among the best known also because they are offered in the taverns of the medieval re-enactments of the town’s districts
The technique for making picchiarelli has always been the same, of kneading and rolling the dough with the fingers on the pastry board. A simple action, repetitive and always the same, which women in San Gemini carry out in groups. Women come together in a collective doing that generates aggregation and socialisation, between women of different generations protecting this ancient tradition.
The meeting point will be the headquarters of the Rione Rocca where you will knead with the grannies in the centuries-old taverns.
The class will be followed by a lunch or dinner with the Picchiarelli you previously made for a tasty ending! 😁
