Sciacca is considered one of the most beautiful and authentic Sicilian towns. A vibrant historical town centre, wonderful beaches and a mild, sunny climate throughout the year make Sciacca the ideal Smartway town where to spend your holiday working periods in autumn and winter.

It is the oldest thermal waters town of Sicily: it was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC as a thermal spa town for the inhabitants of Selinunte, who came there to bathe in the sulphurous springs of Mount San Calogero, which rises up behind the town.

Conquered first by the Romans, then by the Arabs and the Normans during the Middle Ages, it became then part of the the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy.

The city is famous for its pottery tradition and for its colorful festivals throughout the year.

Sciacca’s festivals include the Carnival, celebrated during the week before the beginning of Lent (February). The highlight of the festival is the parade of bizarre figures mounted on floats, famous throughout Sicily for their gaudy expressions.

The Festival of the Madonna del Soccorso and the Festival of San Calogero are two other main celebrations, when the statue of Virgin Mary is carried in a procession through the old town.

Many inhabitants of Sciacca have emigrated to the US during the 19th century, giving birth to a flourishing Italian-American community. Bon Jovi and Anthony Fauci trace back their ancestry to Sciacca.

Getting around the area
